Staff Spotlight: Emily Fisher

Emily with members at Pigabilities

Tell us a little bit about your role and what you do at the JCC

I am the Inclusion Coordinator at the Mayerson JCC. My role has two primary focuses: to develop and manage programming for individuals with disabilities and to develop systems for increased accessibility and inclusion to ensure that members of all abilities can enjoy the full spectrum of our programming.

What does inclusion mean to you in the context of the JCC, and how do you bring that vision to life in your daily work?

Inclusion means everyone having access and space to be themselves! At the J, that means having options! My goal is that members have a variety of options for how they show up and what programming they participate in.

Do you have a memorable moment or story that made you especially proud of the inclusion work you are doing?

I really have had so many small moments of joy; one big one was taking members to the Flying Pig PigAbilities race this spring! It was a first for most of us, and the energy was just amazing! Everyone felt supported and celebrated. I’m excited to go back again next year.

What’s your favorite fidget, and why?

It depends on where I am! I really love the gyro-fidgets, which we purchased from a member of the community this past fall. Those ones are small and quiet, which is ideal for a meeting. I’m also a big fan of a classic pop-it, but those can be a little noisy. Recently, our camp staff shared with me a stress ball that is made of pop-its, and I think it might be the perfect fidget.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in creating more inclusive spaces, and how have you worked to overcome them?

Change is always difficult for a variety of reasons: time, money, and capacity are always limited resources, so it’s about being intentional and strategic about how you use those resources. Part of what I love about my role is being able to think creatively and collaboratively to solve problems.

What advice would you give to parents who are looking for inclusive programs or spaces where their child can truly feel welcomed and supported?

My advice is to reach out! I know a call or email can feel intimidating, but Cincinnati, and specifically the Jewish community, is lucky to have many well-resourced organizations that are eager to include all members of the community. Having a conversation about your needs and barriers you’re facing will make it easier for the next person – and help us work together to build a more inclusive Jewish Cincinnati!
