Overview

The J offers year-round swim lessons for kids of all ages and abilities. Our youth aquatics program is designed to teach personal water safety, stroke development, and personal growth skills to children.

We offer swim classes to ages 12 months to 16 years, as well as beginner adult swim classes. All lessons are taught by certified instructors and private sessions are offered for both kids and adults, based on availability.

Classes must have a minimum of 3 participants in order to run. You will be notified in advance of the class start date if the class is cancelled and given alternative options.

Kids Spring Swimming Classes

Parent/Toddler

Ages 12 months – 3 years 
March 9 – May 24
JCC Leisure Pool

This class is designed to provide a joyful, loving, child-centered environment featuring songs and activities to encourage skill acquisition while developing a love of the water. An adult is required to be in the water during this class with each child.

Swim 100

Ages 3 – 5
March 9 – May 24
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class is designed for children with little exposure to the water.
The goal is for students to comfortably perform these skills in preparation for Swim 101:
front kick with floatation up to 10 feet, back float with support, and submerge up to 3 times repeatedly with air exchange.

Children will also practice entering and exiting the water safely.

Swim 101

Students must be comfortable putting their faces in the water, back floating with support, and be able to kick up to ten feet with floatation.

Ages 3 – 5
March 9 – May 24
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class is for children who can comfortably perform the basic skills taught in Swim 100. They will practice front, back, and in-line kicking, repeated submersion and breath control, surface swimming with pop-up breathing, and rolling over to float. Upon graduation, students will be able to swim 15 feet unassisted, breathing as needed, as well as being able to roll from face-down in the water to rest in a back float for at least 5 seconds.

Swim 102/103

Ages 6 – 12
March 9 – May 24
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class is designed for the older beginner. Students will practice repeated submersion and breath control, flutter kicking on front and back, in-line kicking, and freestyle. Upon graduation, students will be able to swim basic freestyle for 25 feet unassisted, breathing as needed.

Swim 201

Students must be able to swim with face in the water at least 15 ft unassisted, without the aid of a floatation device, lifting the head to breathe as necessary and returning face to the water without hesitation. Those who do not meet this requirement should enroll in a 100-level course.

Ages 3 – 5
March 9 – May 24
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class follows the 100-level classes. Students will learn how to swim freestyle with side breathing and backstroke, while also refining breath control, flutter kick, and streamline. Upon graduation, students will be able to swim freestyle with side breathing and backstroke for 25 feet.

Swim 202/203

Swim 302/303
Students must be able to:
  • Kick 15 ft with a kickboard unassisted
  • Perform a streamline glide of at least 10 ft
  • Swim freestyle with side breathing at least 25 ft.
  • Swim backstroke at least 25 ft.

Ages 6 – 12
March 9 – May 24
JCC Lap Pool 

This class follows Swim 202/203. The instructor will teach the progression of breaststroke and butterfly while refreshing the students’ skills on freestyle and backstroke. Upon graduation, students will be able to swim 25 yards of all 4 strokes.

Swim Team Clinic

Students must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke

Ages 6 – 16
March 11 – May 20
JCC Lap Pool 

This class is for swimmers who want to learn basic swim team skills while also working on strokes and endurance. Upon graduation, swimmers will be able to demonstrate 50 yards each of legal freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly with a flip turn and racing dive entry, as well as a 100 yard Individual Medley of all 4 strokes.

Beginner Swim Lessons

Ages 18+

Beginner Swim Lessons
Mondays, 6:30 – 7:15pm
This introductory class will give students the skills they need to feel comfortable and safe in the water. The instructor will cover skills such as back floating, basic swimming on the front and back, treading water, and submerging.

 

Intermediate Swim Lessons

Ages 18+
March 10 – May 19
JCC Lap Pool 

Intermediate Swim Lessons
Mondays, 7:15 – 8pm
This class is for adults who are comfortable with submersion, floating, and kicking on front and back, and are ready to start learning strokes. The instructor will teach freestyle and backstroke with a goal of refining those strokes and increasing endurance so students can swim for fitness and recreation.

Cancellation Policy

Withdrawals from group swim lessons one week or more prior to the first swim lesson of the session will receive a 100% refund. Withdrawals 6 to 2 days prior to the first lesson of the session will receive a 50% refund. Any withdrawals 24 hours or less prior to the start of the first swim lesson of the session will not receive a refund unless a physician’s note is provided stating that the participant is unable to participate for the duration of the session.
