Overview

The J offers year-round swim lessons for kids of all ages and abilities. Our youth aquatics program is designed to teach personal water safety, stroke development, and personal growth skills to children.

We offer swim classes to ages 12 months to 16 years, as well as beginner adult swim classes. All lessons are taught by certified instructors and private sessions are offered for both kids and adults, based on availability.

Classes must have a minimum of 3 participants in order to run. You will be notified in advance of the class start date if the class is cancelled and given alternative options.

Kids Fall Swimming Classes

Parent/Toddler

Ages 12 months – 3 years 
Fall 1: August 25 – October 19
Fall 2: October 20 – December 14 
JCC Leisure Pool

This class is designed to provide a joyful, loving, child-centered environment featuring songs and activities to encourage skill acquisition while developing a love of the water. An adult is required to be in the water during this class with each child.

Swim 100

Ages 3 – 5
Fall 1: August 25 – October 19
Fall 2: October 20 – December 14
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class is designed for children with little exposure to water. The goal is for students to comfortably perform the following skills in preparation for Swim 101: front kick with floatation up to 10 feet, back float with support, and submerge up to 3 times.

Swim 101

Ages 3 – 5

JCC Leisure Pool 

In this class, students will follow an activity-oriented approach that utilizes child-centered progression for the following skills: submersion, breath control and breath holding, front, back and in-line kicking, and basic surface swimming.

Swim 102/103

Ages 6 – 12
Fall 1: August 25 – October 19
Fall 2: October 20 – December 14 
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class is designed to accommodate motor skills and learning based on the child’s age. The instructor will cover the following skills: breath holding and control, flutter kicking on front and back, in-line kicking, and freestyle.

Swim 201

Students must be able to swim with face in the water at least 15 ft unassisted, without the aid of a floatation device, lifting the head to breathe as necessary and returning face to the water without hesitation. Those who do not meet this requirement should enroll in a 100-level course.

Ages 3 – 5
Fall 1: August 25 – October 19
Fall 2: October 20 – December 14 
JCC Leisure Pool 

This course is designed to follow the 100-level classes. In this class, the instructor will teach children how to swim freestyle with side breathing, and backstroke. They will continue their work on flutter kick, breath control, and streamline kicking.

Swim 202/203

Swim 301
Students must be able to:
  • Kick 15 ft with a kickboard unassisted
  • Perform at least 5 bobs without hesitation (repeated submersion)
  • Kick on back at least 15 ft independently with arms at sides
  • Perform a streamline glide of at least 10 ft
  • Swim freestyle with side breathing at least 15 ft.

 

301: Ages 4 – 5
Fall 1: August 31 – October 19
Fall 2: October 26 – December 14 
JCC Lap Pool 

This course is designed to follow the 100- and 200-level classes. In this class the instructor will teach the progression of breaststroke and butterfly while refreshing the students’ skills on freestyle and backstroke. 

 

Sundays
10:30 – 11am

Swim 302/303
Students must be able to:
  • Kick 15 ft with a kickboard unassisted
  • Perform at least 5 bobs without hesitation (repeated submersion)
  • Kick on back at least 15 ft independently with arms at sides
  • Perform a streamline glide of at least 10 ft
  • Swim freestyle with side breathing at least 15 ft.

 

Ages 6 – 12
Fall 1: August 31 – October 19
Fall 2: October 26 – December 14
JCC Lap Pool 

This course is designed to follow the 100- and 200-level classes. In this class the instructor will teach the progression of breaststroke and butterfly while refreshing the students’ skills on freestyle and backstroke.

Swim Team Clinic

Ages 6 – 16
Fall 1: August 27 – October 15
Fall 2: October 22 – December 10 
JCC Lap Pool 

This class is designed for swimmers who would like to learn basic swim team skills, while having them also work on strokes and endurance.

Students must be able to meet all of the Swim 300 level class requirements, as well as being able to swim the backstroke for 15 feet.

Adult Fall Swimming Classes

Adult Beginner Swim Lessons

Ages 18+
August 26 – October 14 
JCC Lap Pool 

This class provides a comprehensive approach to adult swimming. The instructor will cover basic skills such as freestyle kick, breath control, back floating and kicking, and introduce freestyle stroke, backstroke, and breaststroke.
