Overview

The J offers year-round swim lessons for kids of all ages and abilities. Our youth aquatics program is designed to teach personal water safety, stroke development, and personal growth skills to children.

We offer swim classes to ages 12 months to 18 years. All lessons are taught by certified instructors and private sessions are available for both kids and adults. Our youth aquatics program is designed to teach personal water safety, stroke development, and personal growth skills to children.

Classes must have a minimum of 3 participants in order to run. You will be notified in advance of the class start date if the class is cancelled and given alternative options.

Kids Fall Swimming Classes

Parent/Toddler

Ages 12 months – 3 years
FALL SESSION 1: August 27* – October 21
FALL SESSION 2: October 22 – December 16

This class is designed to provide a joyful, loving, child-centered environment featuring songs and activities to encourage skill acquisition while developing a love of the water. An adult is required to be in the water during this class with each child.

*All classes during the first week of Fall Session 1 will occur in the Outdoor Pool. Lessons will move to the Indoor Aquatic Center beginning with the second week of the session.

Swim 101

Ages 3 – 5
FALL SESSION 1: August 27* – October 21
FALL SESSION 2: October 22 – December 16

In this class students will follow an activity-oriented approach that utilizes child-centered progression for the following skills: submersion, breath control and breath holding, front, back and in-line kicking, and basic surface swimming.

*All classes during the first week of Fall Session 1 will occur in the Outdoor Pool. Lessons will move to the Indoor Aquatic Center beginning with the second week of the session.

Swim 102/103

102: Ages 6 – 9

FALL SESSION 1: August 27* – October 21
FALL SESSION 2: October 22 – December 16
June 4 – August 19

This class is designed to accommodate motor skills and learning based on the child’s age. The instructor will cover the following skills: breath holding and control, flutter kicking on their front and back, in-line kicking, and freestyle.

*All classes during the first week of Fall Session 1 will occur in the Outdoor Pool. Lessons will move to the Indoor Aquatic Center beginning with the second week of the session.

Swim 201

Students must be able to swim with face in the water at least 15 ft unassisted, without the aid of a floatation device, lifting the head to breathe as necessary and returning face to the water without hesitation. Those who do not meet this requirement should enroll in a 100-level course.

201: Ages 3 – 5
FALL SESSION 1: August 27* – October 21
FALL SESSION 2: October 22 – December 16

This course is designed to follow the 100-level classes. In this class the instructor will teach children how to swim freestyle with side breath, and backstroke. They will continue their work on flutter kick, breath control and streamline kicking.

*All classes during the first week of Fall Session 1 will occur in the Outdoor Pool. Lessons will move to the Indoor Aquatic Center beginning with the second week of the session.

Swim 202/203

Students must be able to:
  • Kick 15 ft with a kickboard unassisted
  • Perform at least 5 bobs without hesitation (repeated submersion)
  • Kick on back at least 15 ft independently with arms at sides
  • Perform a streamline glide of at least 10 ft
  • Swim freestyle with side breathing at least 15 ft.

301: Ages 3 – 5
FALL SESSION 1: August 31* – October 19
FALL SESSION 2: October 26 – December 14

This course is designed to follow the 100- and 200-level classes. In this class the instructor will teach the progression of breaststroke and butterfly while refreshing the students’ skills on freestyle and backstroke.

*All classes during the first week of Fall Session 1 will occur in the Outdoor Pool. Lessons will move to the Indoor Aquatic Center beginning with the second week of the session.

Thursdays
5 – 5:30pm

Swim 302/303
Students must be able to:
  • Kick 15 ft with a kickboard unassisted
  • Perform at least 5 bobs without hesitation (repeated submersion)
  • Kick on back at least 15 ft independently with arms at sides
  • Perform a streamline glide of at least 10 ft
  • Swim freestyle with side breathing at least 15 ft.

302: Ages 6 – 9
303: Ages 10 – 12

Swim Team Clinic

This class is designed for those swimmers who would like to learn basic swim team skills, while having them also work on strokes and endurance.
