60 & Better Israeli Music by the Tamari Project

This program is only open to members of the JCC and/or 60 & Better Center. You can learn more about our 60 & Better Center here or contact Melissa Shrimplin at 513.761.7500 ext. 1218. Experience live Israeli music by The Tamari Project, visiting Cincinnati for the modern Israeli holidays. The Tamari Project is a musical initiative in memory of Tamar Kedem Siman Tov, who was murdered on October 7 with her entire family: her husband Jonathan, twin six-year-old daughters, Shachar and Arbel, and two-year-old son, Omer. In addition to being a memorial project, they advocate for the immediate release of the remaining hostages in Gaza.  During the summer of 2014, as operation Tzuk Eitan was going on and under constant rocket and mortar fire, Tamar was part of the team that established the music and art school Bikurim, and later became the principle of Israel’s first youth village for young musicians, right on the Gaza border. The village drew talented kids from across Israel, and helped them fulfill their dreams of becoming professional musicians.   All 50 members of The Tamari Project are the graduates and colleagues of Tamar from Bikurim and the group was created from the deep pain of their community, which suffered a severe blow on October 7 with the murder and abduction of many people close to them. They perform covers of well-known songs, hoping to spread light within the darkness in loving memory of Tamar and in hope of seeing all of the hostages come home.   Yamim Grants are part of the מתחברים | Mit-Habrim | CONNECTIONS funding initiative, a partnership between JCC Association of North America and the Israeli Government’s Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism.

Jewish Book Series: The Most Human by Adam Nimoy

“Adam Nimoy has written about the challenges growing up with his famous father and about their estrangement later in life. The fact that Leonard and Adam found a way to rebuild their relationship should resonate with anyone who struggles with difficult family dynamics.” – George Takei “Engaging and immensely relatable, while at the same time offering deeply profound insights into Adam Nimoy’s personal relationships, particularly with his famous father.” – Eugene Roddenberry Jr., CEO Roddenberry Entertainment While the tabloids and fan publications portrayed the Nimoys as a “close family,” to his son Adam, Leonard Nimoy was a total stranger. The actor was as inscrutable as the iconic half-Vulcan science officer he portrayed on Star Trek, even to those close to him. Now, his son’s poignant memoir explores their complicated relationship and how it informed his views on marriage, parenting, and later, sobriety. Despite their differences, both men ventured down parallel paths: marriages leading to divorce, battling addiction, and finding recovery. Most notably, both men struggled to take the ninth step in their AA journey: to make amends with each other. Discover how the son of Spock learned to navigate this tumultuous relationship—from Shabbat dinners to basement AA meetings—and how he was finally able to reconcile with his father—and with himself. In partnership with Jewish Book Council.

The Wild Within: Exploring Landscape and Memory in Yiddish Literature

Off Site
Jewish life in Eastern Europe—charting not just the physical terrain, but the imagination itself. Robert Adler Peckerar’s recent translations unearth powerful stories rooted in this terrain, and this talk delves into how the region’s history and geography shaped the works of three very different writers. Moyshe Kulbak’s modernist poetry, Itzik Manger’s novel with its seemingly naive takes on religious themes, and the captivating Hasidic tales of Nachman of Bratzlav, all share a common thread: a deep connection to place. Join us as we explore these literary landscapes, uncovering the silent echoes and haunting memories that linger in these places. Robert Adler Peckerar is a cultural historian and translator dedicated to sharing the complex richness of Yiddish literature and East European Jewish culture. He holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and was professor of Jewish literature and culture at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His acclaimed translations and cultural programs delve into the historical and personal landscapes of pre-Holocaust Jewish life. He is currently the CEO of Topa Institute, an intercultural arts center based in Ojai and Los Angeles, California. Reception at 5:00, talk at 5:30
