Each year, the J Classic stands as one of the most anticipated events at the Mayerson JCC. We recently sat down with J Classic Co-Chairs, Steve Baron and Brad Wagner, to gain insight into what drives this remarkable event and the people behind it.
What inspired you to take on the role of co-chair for the J Classic, and what keeps you motivated to continue leading this event?
Steve Baron: My passion for the J Classic stems from my deep appreciation for the organization and its mission. The event is not just a fundraiser; it’s a vibrant celebration that brings our community together, fostering connections and creating lasting memories. Each year, I am inspired by the creativity and enthusiasm that participants bring, making the Classic a truly unique experience. The growth of the J Classic over the years is a testament to the community’s commitment and excitement. It has become our largest event, and witnessing its evolution is incredibly rewarding. Helping lead this event is a privilege that motivates me. I am excited to see how we can innovate further and continue to elevate the experience for everyone involved.
Brad Wagner: The J has always played a meaningful role in my life. From growing up in Youngstown and being active in J programs like sports, camp, and BBYO to returning to Cincinnati, where my family has deep ties to the JCC. Now, my wife and I look forward to our daughter being part of that same community. Co-chairing the J Classic is a way for me to give back to a place that’s shaped my life and continues to make a lasting impact on so many others.
Can you describe the impact that the J Classic has on the community and the programs it supports?
Steve Baron: The J Classic is an immensely positive and impactful event that our entire community eagerly anticipates each year. It serves as a unifying celebration, bringing together individuals from all walks of life, fostering inclusivity and camaraderie among participants. This annual gathering not only marks the culmination of a season of giving but also reinforces our collective commitment to supporting meaningful programs. The funds raised during the Classic support various programs at the J, that make a real difference in the lives of those we serve. Moreover, the J Classic creates a platform for individuals to connect, share their experiences, and celebrate the impact of their contributions. The overall sentiment is one of pride and enthusiasm, as the Classic truly embodies the essence of our community’s spirit and commitment to giving back.
The J Classic brings together a wide variety of activities, from golf to tennis and even a young adult Par-Tee. How do you ensure that all attendees feel engaged and connected, regardless of the activity they choose?
Brad Wagner: We try to ensure there’s something for everyone and that no matter what part of the event you’re involved in, you feel like you are part of the bigger picture. Whether you’re golfing, playing tennis, hanging out at the Par-Tee, or just there to support, everyone makes the day special. It’s not just about the activity itself—it’s about being part of it, connecting with others, and supporting a place that means a lot to all of us.
Steve Baron: The J Classic has a rich history spanning over three decades, during which it has significantly evolved to meet the diverse interests of our community. This evolution is not just about growth; it reflects a deliberate commitment to incorporating feedback from past participants to create an inclusive experience for attendees of all ages and interests. We take great care to offer a wide variety of activities, ensuring that there is something for everyone. This thoughtful approach is evident in the consistently increasing attendance each year, as more individuals feel welcomed and excited to participate. The leadership of the J Classic plays a crucial role in this process, balancing the preservation of traditions with the need to adapt to contemporary trends and preferences. By staying attuned to the needs of our community, we ensure that all attendees feel engaged and connected.
As the largest annual fundraising event for the Mayerson JCC, what do you believe is the most significant impact the J Classic has on the community, both in terms of fundraising and fostering relationships?
Steve Baron: The J Classic fosters a spirit of involvement and collaboration among diverse groups within our community. This event brings together individuals, businesses, and organizations from across Cincinnati, creating a network of support that extends far beyond the day of the event itself. It encourages participation from all corners of the community, uniting people around a common purpose and strengthening relationships among attendees, sponsors, and the JCC staff. The energy and enthusiasm surrounding the event create lasting connections and inspire ongoing engagement with the JCC and its mission, making it a cherished highlight of our annual calendar.
Brad Wagner: The J Classic plays a considerable role in helping the JCC keep doing what it does best—offering programs that support people of all ages, backgrounds, and needs. The money raised makes a real difference, but how it brings people together is just as important. It’s one of those days where you see longtime members catching up, new faces getting involved, and people connecting across different parts of the community. Being part of that and knowing it helps keep the J strong for families like mine—now and in the future.
