Celebrating Fall in Cincinnati

IMG_1490The obsession with everything fall and pumpkin-flavored hasn’t escaped us here at the J.

According a story by NPR, professor of American Studies Cindy Ott found the following interesting trend in the fall madness, “We’re celebrating the nostalgia for this old fashioned, rural way of life, that no one ever really wanted to stay on, but everyone’s always been romantic about,” she said.

Cincinnati, with its color-changing leaves and brisk air, is the perfect place to take in autumn activities and nostalgia. So we figured we’d take an inventory of the places and events around Cincinnati that bring us the most joy during this season.

Pick Apples With Rosh Hashanah right around the corner, now is the perfect time to take the family to pick your own apples! This site lists many of the popular farms and orchards by county in Ohio.

Go to a High Holidays Synagogue Service – The High Holidays are the perfect time to connect with family, friends, and fellow members at a service. Check your local synagogue for their service schedule.

Spooky Pooch – This event features a pet costume contest, a stuffed animal costume contest (for the kids!), a grooming contest, and so much more. Plus, it’s all for a great cause!

Minges & Weber Family Pumpkin Festival – This festival has a 32-year history, with over 150 arts & crafts vendors, games, food, and a petting zoo. Go early – it’s known for the crowd it draws.

Hamilton County Parks – Featuring about 21 parks and nature preserves, the Hamilton County Park system is expansive, and perfect for taking in the changing fall leaves and cooler temperatures. We highly suggest some of their more relaxed hiking/walking trails that often go through wooded areas.

Cruise-In Car Show at Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum – This laid-back car show is the perfect mix of spooky and fun. Held outside of the Spring Grove Gwen Moony Funeral Home, the show often encourages a mix of classic cars and hearses. Food, tours of Spring Grove cemetery, and games are all available.

Ohio Renaissance Festival – About an hour outside of Cincinnati lies a large festival that time forgot. With actors and guests dressing in period-regalia, the Renaissance Festival is known for its garb and its massive turkey legs. We suggest sitting in on the Kamikaze Fireflies show, a mix of acrobatics, fire, and sarcastic wit.

Under One Roof – This sukkah art exhibit at the Mayerson JCC runs from Oct. 17 – 30, and features art from over 40 local organizations including: the Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Museum Center, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, and many more! It’s time to bring people together, whether sharing a meal in the sukkah, or simply perusing the art. Join us!
