Join us for our Senior Celebrations at the J to observe various holidays throughout the year. We also meet for a delicious lunch out with friends.

Overview

Celebrate the holidays with us! From Thanksgiving to Purim, and even Mother’s Day, there’s many reasons to gather and share a meal at the J. In addition, we make plans about once a month to meet at a local restaurant to enjoy lunch together.

Join Rabbi Sammy Kanter for discussion and exploration of passages from the book This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared by Rabbi Alan Lew. The book will guide us into thoughtful discussions about the meaning of the holidays, theological questions, and t’shuvah, the spiritual work of the season.

Jim takes us down the famous Grand Canal, stopping to visit St. Mark’s Square, the Rialto area, the Doge Palace, and several of the hundreds of quaint alleys, squares, and secondary canals that give Venice an exclusive charm like no other city in the world. Sadly, we also see how Venice is slowly being flooded more frequently, regardless of the efforts to block the sea from entering Venice Lagoon. Sponsored by Creative Aging Cincinnati.

Mahjong and Jewish History

The game, which originated in China, was brought to America by Joseph Babcock in the early 20th century. Babcock changed the numbers on the tiles to numerals familiar to Americans and introduced Mah Jongg to the American market. Come learn Mah Jongg’s evolution from a Chinese gambling game to a symbol of Jewish American identity and the game’s enduring cultural significance.

Jim's Florence Adventures

This program is only open to members of the JCC and/or 60 & Better Center. You can learn more about our 60 & Better Center here or contact Melissa Shrimplin at 513.761.7500 ext. 1218.  Florence, the Cradle of the Renaissance and Mother of the Arts, exists today much as it did hundreds of years ago. We visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore complex, located in the Piazza del Duomo. Then it’s on to the Accademia Gallery, whose most prominent attraction is Michelangelo’s David, created between 1501 and 1504. After visiting the Uffizi Gallery, we’ll climb the tower at the Palazzo Vecchio and see the Ponte Vecchio. Sponsored by Creative Aging Cincinnati.
