Why Theatre at the J?
There is a demonstrated need for accessible, inclusive after-school arts programming that reflects and accommodates the cultural and religious practices of Jewish families. Many traditional youth theatre programs and school-based drama opportunities schedule rehearsals and performances on Friday evenings and Saturdays, creating a barrier for families who observe Shabbat. Additionally, costuming and standard choreography can unintentionally exclude students whose religious practices include modesty guidelines or restrictions on physical contact. As a result, Jewish-identifying youth often face limited or no access to theatre education in environments where they feel fully included and respected. There is a clear need for programming that removes these barriers while fostering both artistic growth and a sense of belonging.
Theatre at the J directly addresses these barriers by providing a fully inclusive after-school theatre program intentionally designed around the needs of Jewish families. By scheduling all rehearsals and performances outside of Shabbat, accommodating modesty considerations in costuming, and respecting boundaries around physical interaction, the program creates a space where students can participate fully without compromising their values or practices. In addition, Theatre at the J expands access to arts education for elementary and middle school students who may not have theatre opportunities in their schools. Participants build performance skills, confidence, and collaboration abilities while forming meaningful friendships across diverse backgrounds.
Your financial support helps us to continue to offer high-quality instruction and production values to both new and existing students. Help us continue to grow! Contact Rick Lefton at [email protected] for sponsorship opportunities!
