The J offers year-round swim lessons for kids of all ages and abilities. Our youth aquatics program is designed to teach personal water safety, stroke development, and personal growth skills to children.

We offer swim classes to ages 12 months to 16 years, as well as beginner adult swim classes. All lessons are taught by certified instructors and private sessions are offered for both kids and adults, based on availability.

Classes must have a minimum of 3 participants in order to run. You will be notified in advance of the class start date if the class is cancelled and given alternative options.

Kids Swimming Classes

Parent/Toddler

Ages 12 months – 3 years 
JCC Leisure Pool

This class provides a joyful, child-centered environment with songs and activities to build water skills and a love of the water. An adult must be in the water with each child.

Swim 100 Water Acclimation

Ages 3 – 5
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class is for ages 3–5 with little water experience. Students learn front kick with flotation, back float with support, safe entries/exits, and submerging with air exchange to prepare for Swim 101.

 

Swim 101

Ages 3 – 5 

Students must be comfortable putting their faces in the water, back floating with support, and be able to kick up to ten feet with floatation.

For kids ready beyond Swim 100, this class builds kicking, breath control, submersion, surface swimming with pop-up breathing, and rollover to back float. Graduates can swim 15 feet unassisted and float on their back for 5 seconds.                             

Swim 102/103

Ages 6 – 12
JCC Leisure Pool 

Designed for older beginners, this class teaches submersion, breath control, flutter and in-line kicking, and freestyle. Graduates can swim 25 feet of basic freestyle unassisted, breathing as needed.

Swim 201

Students must be able to swim with face in the water at least 15 ft unassisted, without the aid of a floatation device, lifting the head to breathe as necessary and returning face to the water without hesitation. Those who do not meet this requirement should enroll in a 100-level course.

Ages 3 – 5
JCC Leisure Pool 

This class follows Swim 101. Students will learn freestyle with side breathing and backstroke, refine breath control, flutter kick, and streamline, and swim 25 feet unassisted in both strokes upon graduation.

Swim 202/203

Students must be able to swim with face in the water at least 15 ft unassisted, without the aid of a floatation device, lifting the head to breathe as necessary and returning face to the water without hesitation. Those who do not meet this requirement should enroll in a 100-level course.

Ages 6 -12
JCC Lap Pool   

This class follows the 100-level classes. Students will learn freestyle with side breathing and backstroke, refine breath control, flutter kick, and streamline, and swim 25 feet in both strokes upon graduation.

Swim 302/303
Students must be able to:
  • Kick 15 ft with a kickboard unassisted
  • Perform a streamline glide of at least 10 ft
  • Swim freestyle with side breathing at least 25 ft.
  • Swim backstroke at least 25 ft.

Ages 6 – 12
JCC Lap Pool 

This class follows Swim 202/203. Students will learn breaststroke and butterfly while reviewing freestyle and backstroke. Graduates will swim 25 yards of all four strokes.

Advanced Stroke Development

Students must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke

Ages 6 – 16
JCC Lap Pool 

This class builds swim team skills while improving strokes and endurance. Swimmers who graduate are able to swim 50 yards each of all strokes with turns and dives, plus a 100-yard Individual Medley.

Adult Swimming Classes

Beginner Swim Lessons

Ages 18+
JCC Lap Pool

This introductory class will give students the skills they need to feel comfortable and safe in the water. The instructor will cover skills such as back floating, basic swimming on the front and back, treading water, and submerging.

 

Intermediate Swim Lessons

Ages 18+
JCC Lap Pool 

This class is for adults who are comfortable with submersion, floating, and kicking on front and back, and are ready to start learning strokes. The instructor will teach freestyle and backstroke with a goal of refining those strokes and increasing endurance so students can swim for fitness and recreation.

Cancellation Policy

Withdrawals from group swim lessons one week or more prior to the first swim lesson of the session will receive a 100% refund. Withdrawals 6 to 2 days prior to the first lesson of the session will receive a 50% refund. Any withdrawals 24 hours or less prior to the start of the first swim lesson of the session will not receive a refund unless a physician’s note is provided stating that the participant is unable to participate for the duration of the session.
