We connected with Mayerson JCC member Jessica Chumbley and asked her a few questions.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you joined the J:
My husband and I became members of the J in 2019, shortly after purchasing our first home in Silverton in 2018. The JCC’s close proximity to our new home made it a perfect fit. My good friend from grade school, Ariel Gamm, helped us get our membership, and we’ve had a fantastic experience ever since. I’m so grateful to her for sharing this wonderful community with us!
What are your favorite programs at the J? Why?
Well, it may not be my husband’s favorite, but I love the spa! I try to keep up with quarterly massages and always look forward to my appointments. I’ve utilized multiple services, including massages, facials, and waxing appointments. Every time I leave feeling like a million bucks!
I heard you recently had a little one join the Early Childhood School. Can you speak to that experience?
After being members of the J and seeing how wonderful the facility is, we knew we would want to send our children to ECS at the J. Our baby has only been in daycare for a few weeks, but we couldn’t be happier with the program and the amazing caretakers (big shout out to Chloe, Olivia and Hope in the Avocado Room!). Several of our friends also send their children to the J for daycare and have all praised the teachers for their excellent communication (I love receiving pictures of our little one through the app—it’s so reassuring to see what he’s doing throughout the day) and the high quality of care they provide. We’re so glad we got on the waitlist early and were able to start daycare here right away, and I would highly recommend anyone thinking about starting a family to do the same!
What would you say to someone considering joining the J?
We have encouraged many friends to join! The JCC offers a full suite of amenities for a competitive price. Everyone we’ve encountered—whether at the front desk, the spa, or the daycare—has always been exceptionally friendly. When talking about the J, my husband loves to share the story of how he once left his AirPods on a treadmill, only to have them safely returned to him. That’s the difference between the J and other gyms— it’s a community where people care. Plus, the matzo ball soup is delicious at the J Cafe!
Anything else you would like to add?
In past generations there were many options for people to gain a sense of community through bowling leagues and card groups outside of work, but today it’s not as common. The J is one of the few places left that can give Millennials and Gen Z that sense of community for our growing families to be a part of. That’s what makes it so special.
