When Dr. Ruth Westheimer heard the Surgeon General declare an epidemic of loneliness in this country, she knew she could help. She experienced loneliness early in life after being orphaned by the Holocaust at age ten, and again at age 20 when she was seriously wounded in a bomb blast in Palestine. Her height of 4’7” also set her apart and added to feelings of isolation. Drawing on these life experiences and her training as a sex therapist, she later became New York State’s first Ambassador to Loneliness. From that work came her book The Joy of Connections.
With 100 practical ideas, the book is both a guide to overcoming loneliness and an invitation to build deeper, lasting human connections.
